7 Things You MUST Clean Before Moving Into Any NYC Apartment

The previous tenant left more behind than just their furniture. Before you unpack a single box, here's what actually needs to go — and most landlords won't tell you.

The landlord's version of 'cleaned' and yours are not the same

I've walked into apartments that were supposedly 'professionally cleaned' before move-in, and let me tell you — there's a version of clean that looks clean from the doorway and a version that actually is clean. They are not the same thing.

After 8 years cleaning NYC apartments, I know every shortcut a rushed cleaner takes. I know which ones leave behind the stuff you really don't want to think about. And I know the spots that get skipped every single time because nobody checks them.

1. Inside the kitchen cabinets and drawers

The inside of kitchen cabinets almost never gets touched in a turnover clean. Previous tenants leave crumbs, grease film, old food residue, and sometimes actual pests. Before you put a single plate or food item in there — wipe every surface with a degreaser.

Don't just swipe the shelf liner. Remove it, clean underneath, and replace it with a fresh one. Takes 20 minutes and changes the entire feeling of the kitchen.

2. The refrigerator — inside AND underneath

Even if the fridge looks clean, pull it out and check underneath. The drip pan under most refrigerators is genuinely disgusting after years of use. It's one of the top sources of mystery odors in apartments, and nobody ever thinks to check it.

Also check the rubber door gaskets. Run a damp cloth through every fold. You will be surprised what comes out of there.

3. Behind and under the stove

This area can go years without being cleaned. Grease, dust, crumbs, and everything else that falls and rolls back there over the life of the apartment. Pull the stove out before you cook your first meal.

While you're at it — the stovetop burner wells and under the drip pans. These spots hold onto smells and can actually become a fire hazard when they're dirty enough.

4. The bathroom grout, drain, and back of the toilet

Grout is porous. It holds onto bacteria, mold, and previous-tenant grime even after surface cleaning. Use a grout-specific cleaner or a baking soda paste with a stiff brush. Don't just mop the floor.

The drain and the base of the toilet where it meets the floor are two spots most people completely skip. Both are high-risk areas for mold and bacteria buildup. Get them before you settle in and they become your bacteria.

5. Window sills and tracks

NYC window tracks are a different kind of horror story. Grime, dead insects, dust buildup, and sometimes moisture-related mold that's been sitting in the corners for years. Use a small brush or old toothbrush to get into the track, then wipe clean.

The sills carry dust and residue that gets pushed into the air every time you open the window. A quick wipe-down takes two minutes per window and makes a real difference in air quality.

6. Light switches, outlets, and door handles

High-touch surfaces that almost nobody thinks to clean during a move-out. These get touched hundreds of times a week by the previous tenant and are almost never sanitized between renters.

Wipe them down with a disinfectant before you start touching them every day. Five minutes total. It's one of those things you can't unsee once you start thinking about it.

7. The HVAC vents and bathroom exhaust fan

Dusty HVAC vents are literally blowing whatever's been accumulating in that system around your new apartment from day one. Wipe the vent covers, and if you can access the ducts, run a vacuum attachment through as far as it goes.

The bathroom exhaust fan cover is usually caked in dust and running at reduced efficiency because of it. Pop it off — usually just clips — wash it, let it dry, and put it back. Your bathroom will actually ventilate properly for the first time in years.
